The epic rivalry between Ford and Chevy continues with each new model year as the two all-American brands attempt to one-up each other with new features, functions, and capabilities. In the case of the 2022 Ford F-150 vs 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, the full-size, light-duty pickup trucks each offer a unique list of features that are bound to attract truck shoppers from all corners of the market. But which one has the features you want?
For the 2022 model year, the Chevy Silverado introduces the ZR2 off-road trim, along with new interiors for the LT trim and above. Larger infotainment touchscreens and new tech have been made available, and Chevy Safety Assist has become a standard feature. Chevy also revamped the base 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The 2022 Silverado 1500 is available in nine different trims, with the entry-level WT, the Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, High Country, and ZR2.
For the latest generation, Ford has buffed up the F-150 with a number of new features, including the all-new onboard scales and smart hitch technology. The addition of continuously controlled electronic damping has also been implemented. All new appearance and utility packages have been made available for 2022, including the STX Black Appearance Package for select trims, as well as the Bed Utility Package. A new Atlas Blue color has also been added to the ten available exterior color schemes. Performance
Powertrain Configurations
A full-size truck needs an engine that is not only capable of propelling the vehicle forward but that is also powerful enough to haul and tow. For this reason, most light-duty pickups come with multiple powertrain options and configurations tailored toward what truck shoppers are looking for. In the case of the 2022 Ford F-150 vs 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500, these options include a variety of 4-cylinder, 6-cylinder, and 8-cylinder engines.
Both trucks offer rear-wheel drive standard and four-wheel drive as an option. For the Silverado 1500, the engine lineup includes four different powerplants, starting with a 2.7-liter turbocharged high-output 4-cylinder that manages 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Then there is a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 that manages 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 that outputs 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel inline 6-cylinder that produces 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The EcoTec3 and Duramax powerplants are all paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Five Ford Engine Options
Over in the Ford camp, the F-150 has five different engine options for its 2022 lineup. These start with a 3.3-liter V6, which outputs 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque, followed by a turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, which manages 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Even though it might seem like the Silverado 1500 has the initial power advantage, in reality, those are just the entry-level engines.
Further up the lineup, the F-150 takes a decidedly clear lead, with the 5.0-liter Coyote V8 pumping out 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 manages 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque (450 hp and 510 lb-ft in the Raptor). Finally, the turbocharged 3.5-liter PowerBoost Hybrid V6 produces 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. All of the Ford F-150’s power plants are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
From a pure power perspective, the F-150 trumps the Silverado 1500 with its high-end options. This rings especially true when you look at the difference in torque output, particularly when comparing the hybrid PowerBoost to the diesel Duramax. Although the latter is supposed to offer the quickest access to low-end torque, the PowerBoost offers an extra 110 lb-ft of torque, which makes a massive difference when you need that extra torque output.

The capabilities of a pickup cannot be overstated. A lot of people make use of them for the sole purpose of towing heavy loads or hauling cargo in the bed. Finding a functional, easily usable, and reliable pickup is very important when truck shopping. The Silverado 1500 has Regular Cab, Double Cab, and Crew Cab options available, which also seat up to six people. When it comes to the bed, the F-150 gives you three sizes to choose from, with a short, standard, and long box. The Silverado 1500 also has short, standard, and long box options. The difference is in the amount of cargo you can haul.
Payload and Towing
For the 2022 model year, the F-150 can manage a maximum payload capacity of 3,325 lbs. It’s an impressive amount for a light-duty pickup. The Silverado 1500 tries to compete but certainly comes up short with its maximum payload capacity of just 2,270 lbs. You get well over 1,000 lbs of additional payload capacity with the F-150, which gives it a lot more utility than the Silverado 1500. When it comes to trailering, the F-150 steps out ahead of the Silverado once more, with a maximum towing capacity of 14,000 lbs. The Silverado 1500 tops out at 13,300 lbs, so you can tow an additional 700 lbs with the F-150. Overall, you simply get more functionality out of the F-150, both with towing and hauling.
Off-Road Functionality

In recent years, there has been a push from various manufacturers to try to become the king of the off-road world. It’s a difficult segment to break into, but Ford and Chevy have both taken a crack at it with their respective full-size pickup trucks; in Ford’s case with the F-150 Raptor and in Chevy’s case with the Silverado 1500 ZR2. But which one has more off-road functionality? Well, this is one of those cases where the 2022 Ford F-150 and 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 get awfully close to one another in terms of features.
In the Silverado’s case, the new ZR2 is powered by a 6.2-liter V8 that outputs 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. It also features Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers. This upgraded suspension is designed for shunts, jumps, and off-road traversal and includes custom-tuned springs for better suspension travel. Front and rear electronic locking differentials and 33-inch off-road mud-terrain tires are also packed into the ZR2. As usual, skid plates come standard, and the truck has 11.2 inches of ground clearance.
The Raptor
The Ford F-150 Raptor, however, provides 12 inches of ground clearance and features available beadlock-capable 17-inch wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires. That’s a notable upgrade over what the Silverado ZR2 offers. The Raptor also comes with a five-link rear suspension with extra-long trailing arms and unique 24-inch coil springs. A specially tuned suspension features FOX Racing Shox Live Valve internal bypass shocks. With electronically controlled dynamic damping and anodized aluminum shock bodies, this means that the F-150 Raptor is more than capable of handling the toughest bumps and the roughest hills you could think of climbing.
Even the F-150 Raptor’s engine proves to be a worthy competitor. It may be a V6, but thanks to its twin-turbocharged configuration, it still manages to produce more power than the Silverado ZR2’s V8, offering 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. And with features like Trail Control enabling drivers to hill climb and rock crawl using one-pedal driving, it means you can focus more on the adventure rather than fighting with your vehicle. This certainly gives the 2022 F-150 a nice edge over the 2022 Silverado 1500 if you were thinking about which truck offers better off-roading capabilities.
