A silver 2021 Ford F 150 Platinum is angled left.

For more than 40 years, the Ford F-Series trucks have been the best selling vehicles in America – not only the best selling trucks but the highest sellers for any type of vehicle. This kind of pedigree is something that other brands might find daunting and could keep them from pushing further with each new generation, but not Ford. The 2021 Ford F-150 is as tough and impressive as ever, with an incredible selection of engines to give you the kind of muscle and capability you need. With so many options to choose from, it is easy to put together an F-150 with a blend of power, ability, and innovation that is perfect for you.

There are six different engines available for the 2021 F-150, which means you have a tremendous amount of freedom in getting the type of performance you need. The standard engine is a great place to start, and if you need more power, then there is an incredible 5.0L V8 engine and even a Turbo Diesel to choose from. New for the 2021 model, there is now a 3.5L Full Hybrid V6 engine available, giving you an incredible amount of power and amazing performance thanks to its motor. No matter which engine you choose, a 10-speed automatic transmission comes standard for excellent performance.

Flashy engines do not mean much if a truck cannot get work done, but that is where the F-150 continues to shine. Depending on the engine and overall configuration you choose, the 2021 Ford F-150 can handle up to 14,000 lbs of towing capacity or up to 3,325 lbs of maximum payload. Combine that with incredible available technology like Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist system and Pro Power Onboard, and you have a pickup with remarkable functionality and capability. Plus, an all-new interior with an available 12-inch infotainment display and a 12-inch driver display really let you get the most from your truck.

Engines

No matter what kind of vehicle you are interested in, you should always consider the engine in it since so much else depends on that. This is especially true with a full-size truck. The kind of performance you get, its towing abilities, and much more all rely on a powerful engine. Fortunately, the 2021 Ford F-150 has six different engines for you to choose from, each offering an impressive amount of power and performance.

Choose Your Level of Power

The standard engine on the F-150 is a 3.3L Ti-VCT V6 that offers 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque for solid starting performance and a great driving experience. If you want more power, then there is an available 2.7L EcoBoost engine that delivers 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, as well as a 5.0L Ti-VCT V8 engine with a stout 400 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. These are both excellent upgrade options that showcase the kind of power you can get with this truck.

If you are looking for the most powerful option with a conventional engine in the 2021 Ford F-150, then there is an available 3.5L EcoBoost engine that provides 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. All of this torque makes this engine excellent for towing, uphill driving, and handling pretty much anything else you throw at it. There is also an available 3.0L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel engine if you are interested in a diesel option, which delivers 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. While a diesel engine is not necessarily the right fit for everyone, it is a great choice for a lot of drivers and provides excellent fuel efficiency.

New for the 2021 model year, the F-150 also has an available 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6 engine, which delivers a stunning 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. This new hybrid engine really is something special, giving you excellent towing and payload capabilities, along with an estimated 25 MPG in the city, 26 MPG on the highway, and 25 MPG combined fuel economy. No matter which engine you choose, you get a 10-speed automatic transmission that delivers an incredibly smooth and responsive driving experience, with rear-wheel drive standard and four-wheel drive available.

Capability

Some would argue that capability, in the form of towing and payload capacities, is the most important factor when shopping for a truck. While we always like to take a holistic approach and look at the entire vehicle, we also understand that mindset. Fortunately, no matter how you choose to shop for your next truck, the towing and payload of the 2021 Ford F-150 is at the top of the industry.

Customize and Optimize Your Towing

It is important to remember that your choice of engine and overall configuration has a huge impact on how much work your truck can get done. To keep things simple, we will highlight the optimal performance for each engine option, but we are happy to talk to you about all of your options and discuss towing and payload in much more detail. The standard engine for the F-150, the 3.3L V6, has a maximum towing capacity of up to 8,200 lbs when properly configured. By comparison, the available 2.7L EcoBoost engine can handle up to 10,000 lbs of towing.

If you look at the 5.0L V8 engine, then it can get up to 13,000 lbs of towing capacity, while the available 3.5L EcoBoost engine offers the maximum towing capacity at 14,000 lbs. The available 3.0L Diesel engine can provide 12,100 lbs of towing capacity, while the new 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid engine delivers up to 12,700 lbs of maximum towing. As you can see, the choice of engine really does have a major impact on how much weight you can pull behind you.

Customize and Optimize Your Payload

Payload is similarly impacted by which engine you choose since the weight of the engine affects how much weight you can load onto the Ford F-150. Your configuration choice also comes into play, however, so keep that in mind. The standard engine can handle up to 1,985 lbs of maximum payload, while the 2.7L EcoBoost has a maximum payload of up to 2,480 lbs.

If you go with the available 5.0L V8 engine, then you can get the highest payload capacity for the 2021 Ford F-150, which is 3,325 lbs when properly configured. The 3.5L EcoBoost engine tops out at a comparable 3,250 lbs of maximum payload. Due to the weight of the diesel engine, it can manage up to 1,840 lbs of payload, while the available hybrid engine can handle up to 2,120 lbs of payload when properly equipped.

Technology

Impressive Technology to Make Your Ride Better

There are some remarkable technological innovations to be found inside and out with the 2021 Ford F-150, starting with the all-new interior. Not only does it look amazing, but there is an available 12-inch infotainment display in the center console, along with a 12-inch digital driver display. With customizable options and the updated SYNC 4 software, these are both easy to use and really keep you informed while you are behind the wheel. Combine these with the available interior work surface that is perfect for a laptop or tablet, and you have a mobile office that cannot be beat.

Just as impressive, however, is the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system, which makes towing easier than ever before. With this available system, you can turn a knob in order to adjust the trailer while backing up, making it easy to maneuver into even the tightest of spaces. The rearview camera with Dynamic Hitch Assist gives you a view behind you, even while towing, that makes it easy to see obstacles or traffic behind you. The available blind spot information system with Trailer Coverage extends to what you are towing to warn you when someone hides in your blind spot.

One of the features we love most is the Pro Power Onboard system that has been updated and improved upon for 2021. This system gives you numerous options for additional outlets and plugs for your truck, with several outlets located in the bed of the F-150. Depending on the configuration and engine you choose, you can get up to six 120V outlets and a 240V outlet. These let your truck power anything from a reciprocating saw or air compressor to a blender, TV, or microwave. Whether you are working, playing, or a little of both, your Ford truck will have you covered for just about anything you want to plug in.
