The History of the Bronco

Did you know that the Bronco was Ford’s first-ever SUV? Launched in 1966, the original Bronco was an off-road-ready competitor that went head to head with models like the Jeep CJ and International Harvester Scout. The first Broncos only came with a two-door body style and featured a relatively small 92-inch wheelbase. Riding on a dedicated truck platform, the Bronco was built for off-roading, with standard four-wheel drive and a shift-on-the-fly transfer case.

Ford expanded the lineup to include a convertible roadster version and an open-bed pickup version, but neither lasted long. At its heart, the Bronco was a true SUV. The Bronco grew into a full-size SUV for its second generation, which began with the 1978 model year. It was 28 inches longer and well over 1,000 lbs heavier than the original, which was a bold decision at a time when fuel prices were spiking. But within two years, the Bronco became a best-seller in the segment, so much so that Ford couldn’t keep up with demand.

Still only offered in two-door versions, the 1970s Bronco favored brawn over refinement. Still, for added premium extras like air conditioning, a radio, a tilt steering wheel, and a three-passenger front bench seat, which converted it into a six-passenger SUV. Launched in 1980, the third generation featured more efficient powertrains and sat on the F-150 pickup platform. An inline six-cylinder engine was included as the standard motor and paired with a manual transmission.

The fourth and fifth generations led to substantial design changes. Notably, more comfort and convenience features and a handful of luxury-level appointments were added. Leather seating was available, along with power mirrors with embedded signal lights. Anti-lock braking was also incorporated to meet new federal safety guidelines. However, sales decreased, leading to Ford’s decision to discontinue the Bronco in 1996 for goodā€¦or so we thought.

The Reimagined Bronco Wows Fans

Flash forward to 2021, andā€“ā€“to the excitement of drivers everywhereā€“ā€“Ford launches the all-new, completely reimagined Ford Bronco. Featuring retro 1960s-era styling and an array of modern technology, the new Bronco lineup earned a spot on Car and Driver’s Editor’s Choice List. This time around, Ford offers the Bronco in two- and four-door body styles. A powerful 300-hp standard engine delivers plenty of low-range torque, but thrill seekers can opt for a more powerful 330-hp twin-turbo version.

Choosing just one vehicle from the Ford Bronco’s expansive multi-trim lineup can be difficult for buyers. Decisions over the soft top or traditional hardtop, extra off-roading equipment, and upscale premium finishes have to be made before buying, but that didn’t stop Ford from selling out its First Edition version within hours. Hardcore off-roaders love the Bronco’s Sasquatch Package, which adds massive mud tires, a factory lift, and a tricked-out suspension.

Soccer parents and suburban drivers aren’t left out, thanks to the Bronco Outer Banks. This version prioritizes premium cabin features like leather seating, a massive 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, and an available Bang & Olufsen audio system with concert-grade sound. By contrast, the rugged Wildtrak included FOX dampers, electronic locking front, and rear axles, and multiple advanced trail riding technologies, including Trail Turn Assist and Trail Control.
