Overview and History of the Ford F-150

When folks say that Henry Ford pretty much invented the pickup truck, they aren’t joking. Ford has been building trucks for over 100 years, dating back to Model TT, which first hit the road back in 1917. Since then, Ford has been a leader in innovation for the pickup truck, focusing on making trucks as durable and capable as ever. This was shown to great effect in 1948 when Ford rolled out the first F-Series pickup, the Bonus-Built, which greeted returning GIs who wanted a truck that could look great doing all the jobs a working person needed to get done. The most popular proved to be the F-1, a half-ton model that would eventually grow into today’s F-150.

By 1953, the F-1 had been re-designated the F-100, featuring such features as an automatic transmission, armrests, dome lights, sun visors, and improved heaters and radios that were revolutionary for a pickup truck at the time. Ford continued these innovations in creature comforts throughout the ’50s and ’60s, culminating in the 1975 modelā€“the first Ford truck given the F-150 designation. This had a higher capacity than the F-100, with better emissions performance as well to meet new industry standards. Ford also introduced a Club Cab that was the first truck in the line to have two rows of seats, which would eventually become today’s SuperCab and SuperCrew. Today, you can choose between these two cab designs as well as the original two-door single row Regular Cab.

At this point, the Ford F-Series was already in its sixth generation, having produced trucks for over 58 years. When 1977 rolled around, the Ford F-150 became the biggest-selling truck in the United States, helped in part by a new advertising campaign that featured the slogan Built Ford Tough. These three words would reflect the mindset of all Ford trucks ever since.

The seventh generation of the F-Series would start as 1980 rolled around, marking the first time the F-150 would be part of a new generation of Ford trucks. Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Ford would constantly improve the F-150 with bigger and more capable engines, all the way up to a 5.8L V8. This would result in increased towing and payload capabilities on the truck. The automaker would also improve safety and handling on the F-150 through such innovations as improved aerodynamics, power steering, and anti-lock brakes.

As the new century rolled around, Ford continued to improve the technology of the F-150. This included the SYNC system that integrated the truck’s information, entertainment, and phone connectivity features. The days of the utilitarian truck were long gone. In its place was an F-150 built with high-strength, military-grade aluminum alloy that was light, strong, and durable, offering drivers a plush interior similar to those found on luxury sedans and SUVs. In addition, Ford began installing an increasing number of advanced safety equipment into the F-150. As a result, the thirteenth-generation F-150 introduced in 2015 became the first pickup truck to earn a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The fourteenth generation of the Ford F-150 was introduced for the 2021 model year, representing the most advanced and capable full-size pickup truck built by Ford to date. No wonder the Ford F-150 is the best-selling vehicle in the United States.

The five engines include a 3.6-liter V6 gas engine, a 2.7-liter EcoBoost turbo V6, a 5.0-liter V8, a 3.5-liter EcoBoost turbo V6, and a 3.5-liter PowerBoost Turbo V6 Hybrid. If you hear “hybrid” and think “weak,” don’tā€“that engine offers 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque, the most of both on any 2022 F-150 model. As a result, the 2022 Ford F-150 can tow up to 14,000 pounds and carry up to 3,325 pounds of payload, depending on which trim, engine, cab design, and drivetrain you choose.

Ford offers the F-150 with your choice of rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, so you can decide whether you want the better fuel economy and trailering capability offered by rear-wheel drive or the improved traction of a 4X4 system.
