About the Ford Explorer

The Ford Explorer first hit the roads here in Sacramento back in 1991. Those first Explorers came with two doors or four doors, seating up to five passengers. This would change in 2002. That year, the third generation of the Explorer was introduced, and it would revolutionize the SUV world. In addition to a larger body with four-wheel independent suspension, Ford also began offering the Explorer with an optional third row of seats. This allowed drivers to carry up to seven passengers in their Explorer. This would remain an optional feature on the Ford Explorer until the fifth generation model was introduced in 2011.

The 2011 Ford Explorer became the first model to feature a standard third row of seats. In addition, Ford went from a body-on-frame design for the Explorer to a unibody chassis, providing a comfortable ride that was more conducive to family drivers. This makes sense since the three rows of seats made the Explorer more attractive to family drivers who needed the added space and carrying capacity. Now, carpooling the kids and their friends to school and activities was easier than ever.

The fifth-generation Explorer initially featured a standard 3.5-liter V6 gas engine with either four-wheel drive or front-wheel drive. This would change with the addition of the 2.0-liter EcoBoost Turbo I-4 gas engine in 2012 and a Sport edition with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 gas engine in 2013. Ford would eventually drop the 2.0-liter I-4 for a more powerful 2.3-liter EcoBoost in 2016.

The Explorer would undergo a complete redesign for the 2020 model year. Front-wheel drive was out, replaced with more traditional rear-wheel drive, but four-wheel drive remained an option for drivers who wanted the added traction provided by that drivetrain. The standard 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine was carried over from the fifth generation, with a V6 hybrid option added to the mix. The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 was replaced by a higher output 3.0-liter EcoBoost Turbo V6 on the ST model, capable of 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque.

The Explorer Hybrid combines a 3.3-liter V6 gas engine with an electric motor for an incredible mix of power and efficiency. The added electric boost in this model of the Explorer gives it a range of over 500 miles and a rated fuel economy of up to 28 MPG combined in the 2020 model. Most impressively, the hybrid powertrain still produces 318 hp and 322 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

The sixth-generation Explorer has a sleeker, more aerodynamic appearance than the fifth-generation model. Still, both Ford Explorer generations provide three rows of seats in a roomy cabin, with the ability to get a great deal of cargo space by easily folding down the rear two rows of seats.

The Ford Blue Advantage CPO Program

Ford Blue Advantage is one of the most comprehensive CPO programs availableā€“ā€“it is actually two programs in one. Gold Certified covers models like the Ford Explorer up to six years old with fewer than 80,000 miles. Blue Certified is for vehicles up to 10 years old or less and with fewer than 120,000 miles. Whichever you choose, you will get a CPO Explorer that has undergone a comprehensive vehicle inspection covering 172 points total for the Gold Certified program or 139 points for Explorers under the Blue Certified program.

One of the biggest benefits of buying a Ford Explorer under the Ford Blue Advantage program is the extended warranty that you will receive. A Gold Certified CPO Ford Explorer comes with a 12-month/12,000-mile comprehensive limited warranty that covers most parts and features, plus a seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty. This is important since the powertrain is often the most difficult and expensive part of the vehicle to repair. If you choose a Blue Certified CPO Ford Explorer, you will get a 90-day/4,000-mile limited warranty that covers most of the systems on your Explorer.

The warranties you receive through Ford Blue Advantage include 24/7 roadside assistance. In addition to towing your Explorer to the nearest Ford dealership for repair, you also get travel expense reimbursement for up to $1,000 to cover food, lodging, and a rental vehicle if you break down over 100 miles from home. Destination expense assistance of up to $75 will cover the cost of reaching your destination by taxi, shuttle, or rental car. Rental car reimbursement will cover up to $200 if your Explorer needs overnight repairs.

Each CPO Explorer comes with a free CARFAX vehicle history report. This will provide you with important information about your Explorer, including whether it was involved in an accident, how many prior drivers owned the vehicle, confirmation of the odometer reading, and if there are any outstanding open recalls.

When you buy a CPO Explorer, you will automatically receive FordPass Rewards Points. These can be used to purchase another Ford vehicle, repair your existing Ford vehicle, or for any other service you may receive from your Ford dealership. Drivers who buy a Gold Certified CPO Explorer receive 22,000 points, while those who opt to purchase a Blue Certified model get 11,000 points.
